About 14K Gold Filled
Despite its name, gold filled jewelry is not actually filled with gold; but rather it consists of a base metal, such as brass or copper, that is covered in sheets of gold. These gold sheets are bonded to the base metal using heat. Once this process has taken place, you are left with jewelry covered in a thick layer of gold that usually constitutes 5% of its weight. When comparing gold filled versus gold plated, gold plated consists of less than 0.05% of its weight in gold.
Therefore, gold filled makes it hard wearing and resistant to tarnishing. Compared to solid gold, it is also a far more affordable option for your everyday wear.
Because gold filled is more tarnish resistant than gold plated jewellery, they do last longer depending on how you take care of your pieces. Please refer to the tips and tricks paper that came with your order. If taken care of properly, gold filled jewelry allows it to last a very long time with proper care. Please be advised to avoid any chlorine, as this will damage the beads!! By taking proper care for your gold filled jewelry, you can prevent tarnishing happening to your gold filled bracelets.
The difference between gold filled and gold plated is the process in which the gold is applied to the base metal. Both forms of gold can use brass or copper metals. However, gold filled is coated with sheets of gold, that constitutes 5% of its weight. This makes gold filled pieces more desirable, shiny and longer lasting; while gold plating is covered with a thin layer of gold, with less than 0.05% of its weight in gold, hence the lower cost and fast tarnishing of gold plated pieces.
